Notes:

SRF's translation comes, with his permission, from Mir Taqi Mir: Selected Ghazals and Other Poems, translated by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2019. Murty Classical Library of India; Sheldon Pollock, General Editor. Ghazal 18, p. 53.

S. R. Faruqi:

(1) Love in itself is both sickness and medicine.
What can the shaikh know about what love is?

(2) Were there no love, all management and control would disappear.
The poets speak the truth: God is love.

FWP:

(inspired by SRF's translation)

(1) Passion itself is the pain, passion itself is the cure.
Shaikh, how would you know what passion is?

(2) Without you, all order would depart.
The poets speak truly-- passion is the Lord.

Zahra Sabri:

(1) Love is pain, and Love itself is its remedy
Oh shaikh, what would you know about what Love is

(2) If you were not there, all rule and direction would disappear
The poets are truthful – God is Love
