" THE HEAD TABLE-SERVANT (KHANSAMA) CARRYING A CANTEEN, COMPANY SCHOOL, LUCKNOW, INDIA, CIRCA 1825-30, watercolour on paper, framed. A version of the same subject, painted by a Lucknow artist, is in an album in the India Office Library (Add. Or. 1307, in album Add. Or. 1284-1333) (see Archer, M., Company Drawings in the India Office Library, London, 1972, p. 162 and pl.61). Genre subjects of this kind were produced with a British clientele in mind; usually they were part of a series showing 'manners and customs' and were typically pasted into albums to be kept as souvenirs of life in India, or to be sent home to relatives in England."
