"QUR'AN, SAFAVID IRAN, DATED SHAWWAL AH 1232 SHAWWAL/AUGUST 1817 AD
Manuscript on paper, 310ff. each with 14ll. of black naskh between
black and gold rules, red Persian interlinear translation in red tal'iq,
gold, green, red and blue verse markers, gold and polychrome illuminated
marginal cartouches marking juz' and other divisions, sura headings in
red thuluth on gold ground with floral ornament over blue ground, blue
and gold margins, opening illuminated page with surat al-fatiha and polychrome
scrolling floral arabesques over blue and gold, the facing page with the
start of surat al-baqara missing, original black morocco binding with with
stamped and gilded medallions and cornerpieces with floral decoration and
traces of polychrome, back board of binding loose, damage to one corner,
later associated box. Folio 10 x 6 7/8in. (25.6 x 17.2cm.).
