1) in the eyes of the stars, your earth is the sky |
dīdah-e
anjum meñ hai terī zamīñ , āsmāñ |

ah! that for centuries your atmosphere has been without the call to prayer |
āh
! kih ṣadyoñ se hai terī faẓā be-ażāñ |
|
2) in which valley is it, at which stage is it-- |
kaun
sī vādī meñ hai , kaun sī manzil meñ hai |
|
disaster-fomenting passion's tough-lifed caravan? |
ʿishq-e
balā-ḳhez kā qāfilah-e saḳht-jāñ ! |
|
3) Germany has already seen the turmoil of the reform of the faith |
dekh
chukā almanī shorish-e iṣlāḥ-e dīñ |
|
which did not leave anywhere traces of the old form |
jis
ne nah chhoṛe kahīñ naqsh-e kuhan ke nishāñ |
|
4) it became an erroneous
word, the venerableness of the religious elder |
ḥarf-e
ġhalat̤ ban gaʾī ʿiṣmat-e pīr-e kunisht |
|
the delicate boat of thought began to move further |
aur
huʾī fikr kī kishtī-e nāzuk ravāñ |
|
5) the eye of the French
too has already seen revolution |
chashm-e
firāñsīs bhī dekh chukī inqilāb |
|
from which became differently-colored the world of the westerners |
jis
se digr-gūñ huʾā maġhribiyoñ kā jahāñ |
|
6) the Rome-descended community, elderly through the worship of the ancient-- |
millat-e
rūmī-nizhād kuhnah-parastī se pīr |
|
through the relish of renewal it too became young again |
lażżat-e
tajdīd se vuh bhī huʾī phir javāñ |
|
7) in the spirit of the Muslim
is today that same restlessness |
rūḥ-e
musalmāñ meñ hai āj vuhī iẓt̤irāb |
|
this is a divine mystery, the tongue cannot speak it |
rāz-e
ḳhudāʾī hai yih kah nahīñ saktī zabāñ ! |
|

let's see, from the depth of that ocean, what leaps out |
dekhiye
us baḥr kī tah se uchhaltā hai kyā |
|
how the azure dome changes its color |
gunbad-e
nīlofarī rang badaltā hai kyā ! |
