what place is this, friends, which land is
this where as far as the eye can see there's only dust and more dust? |
yih
kyā jagah hai dosto yih kaun sā diyār hai ḥad-e nigāh tak jahāñ ġhubār hī ġhubār hai |
what place is this to which life has brought
me where there is neither control over happiness nor power over grief? |
yih
kis muqām par ḥayāt mujh ko le ke ā gaʾī nah bas ḳhvushī pah hai jahāñ nah ġham pah iḳhtiyār hai |
life demands an account of a whole lifetime what would my heart say, since it is ashamed before its own self? |
tamām
ʿumr kā ḥisāb māñgtī hai zindagī yih merā dil kahe to kyā kih ḳhvud se sharm-sār hai |
who is calling me from that side of the screens? is someone sad and restless for me too? |
bulā
rahā hai kaun mujh ko chilmanoñ ke us t̤araf mire liʾe bhī kyā koʾī udās be-qarār hai |
Here's the form of the ghazal that Shahryar published in his own name, as serious Urdu poetry: | |
what place is this, friends, which land is this where as far as the eye can see there's only dust and more dust? |
yih
kyā jagah hai dosto yih kaun sā diyār hai ḥad-e nigāh tak jahāñ ġhubār hī ġhubār hai |
every single body is deformed by the torment of the spirit every single eye is dew-wet, every single heart is wounded |
har
ek jism rūḥ ke ʿażāb se niḍhāl hai har ek āñkh shabnamī har ek dil figār hai |
we don't believe even in the beats of our own heart |
hameñ
to apne dil kī dhaṛkanoñ pah bhī yaqīñ nahīñ ḳhvushā vuh log jin ko dūsroñ pah ʿitibār hai |
one that has no name, one that has no form-- why have we waited from eternity for such a thing? |
nah
jis kā nām hai koʾī nah jis kī shakl hai koʾī ik aisī shai kā kyūñ hameñ azal se intiz̤ār hai |
