a ghazal composed by Shahryar for the film, and sung by Talat Aziz | meter: #18 in the *meter list* |
whenever life brings us into your gathering this earth appears better than a moon to us |
zindagī
jab bhī tirī bazm meñ lātī hai hameñ yih zamīñ chāñd se bihtar naz̤ar ātī hai hameñ |
the heart's roads are perfumed with red flowers when the day has waned, your voice somehow calls to us |
surḳh
phūloñ se mahak uṭhtī haiñ dil kī rāheñ din ḍhale yūñ tirī āvāz bulātī hai hameñ |
your memory, sometimes through a knock and
sometimes through a whisper, in the last watch of the night, every day wakes us |
yād
terī kabhī dastak kabhī sar-goshī se rāt ke pichhle pahar roz jagātī hai hameñ |
why is the outcome of every meeting, separation? now, all the time, this thought torments us |
har
mulāqāt kā anjām judāʾī kyūñ hai ab to har vaqt yihī bāt satātī hai hameñ |
since I'm separated from you, now whom does
she cause us to meet? what color does life, having taken a look, show to us? |
tum
se bichhṛī hai to ab kis se milātī hai hameñ zindagī dekh ke kyā rang dikhātī hai hameñ |
Here's the form of the ghazal that Shahryar published in his own name, as serious Urdu poetry: | |
since we're separated from you, now whom does it cause us to meet? let's see what mood life shows us |
tujh
se bichhṛe haiñ to ab kis se milātī hai hameñ zindagī dekhiye kyā rang dikhātī hai hameñ |
at one time your image was the focus of eye and heart today, how we laugh at this thought! |
markaz-e
dīdah-o-dil terā taṣavvur thā kabhī āj is bāt pah kitnī hañsī ātī hai hameñ |
again somehow there will be a collision between dream and reality again some nameless destination calls us |
phir
kahīñ ḳhvāb-o-ḥaqīqat meñ tasādum hogā phir koʾī manzil-e be-nām bulātī hai hameñ |
neither in the heart that pain, nor in the eyes that storm no telling which direction this is, where the world is taking us |
dil
meñ vuh dard nah āñkhoñ meñ vuh tugyānī hai jāne kis simt yih dunyā liye jātī hai hameñ |
how gracious is the revolving of the times, that today this earth appears better than a moon to us |
gardish-e
vaqt kā kitnā baṛā iḥsāñ hai kih āj yih zamīñ chāñd se bihtar naz̤ar ātī hai hameñ |
