It's quite a punchy and funny verse. Kohkan of course is a classic example of ;xastah-;haalii himself-- but when he contemplates the speaker, he shudders, and fervently thanks God for sparing him that degree of wretchedness. Or rather, he simply gives thanks to God (for something unspecified), leaving us readers as usual to put it all together. But in this case it's not hard to do, and there aren't half a dozen ways to do it. The verse is just witty and enjoyable, and then the reader is ready to move on.
