{1174,1}

ṭhanḍī sāñseñ bhareñ haiñ jalte haiñ kyā tāb meñ haiñ
dil ke pahlū se ham ātish meñ haiñ aur āb meñ haiñ

1) we heave cold sighs, we burn-- in what affliction/heat we are!
2) from the side of the heart, we are in fire and are in water

Notes:

tāb : 'Heat, warmth; burning, inflaming; pain, affliction, grief; anger, indignation, wrath, rage; light, radiance, lustre, splendour; strength, power, ability, capability; endurance, brooking;—bending, twisting (by heat); bend, twist, contortion; curling, curl'. (Platts p.303)

āb : 'Water; water or lustre (in gems); temper (of steel, &c.); edge or sharpness (of a sword, &c.); sparkle, lustre; splendour; elegance; dignity, honour, character, reputation'. (Platts p.1)

S. R. Faruqi:

The 'ground' is extremely superb; but in the opening-verse, besides the wordplay of āb and tāb , there's no excellence.
