1a) after marriage, every single one longed
for children |
shādī
ke baʿd ek ek ko thī ārzū aulād kī |
2a) you endured the suffering of pain-exclamations
[dardā], you suffered the harshnesses of childbirth 2b) when you tasted the relish of death, then you acquired this wealth |
dardoñ
ke dukh tum ne sahe jāpe kī jhelīñ saḳhtiyāñ jab maut kā chakkhā mazā tab tum ko yih daulat milī |
3a) in the parental home and the in-laws' home,
all their hearts were blooming like gardens 3b) radiance came into the house, but trouble fell on you |
maike
meñ aur susrāl meñ sab ke huʾe dil bāġh bāġh ghar meñ ujālā to huʾā par tum pah biptā paṛ gaʾī |
4a) food, clothing, veiling-- you forgot everything
of your own 4b) [*urdu 4*] in your occupation with the children, you no longer had any care for yourself |
khānā
pahannā oṛhnā apnā gaʾīñ sab bhūl tum bachchoñ ke dhande meñ tumheñ apnī nah kuchh sudh budh rahī |
5a) even so, consider that everything was fine,
as long as all were hale and hearty 5b) but a disaster confronted you, if anybody became unwell |
tab
tak bhī samjho ḳhair thī jab tak bhale chunge the sab par sāmnā āfat kā thā gar ho gayā māñdā koʾī |
6a) days began to pass on the scaffold,
in the nights sleep fled away |
sūlī
pah din kaṭne lage rātoñ kī nīñdeñ uṛ gaʾīñ ek ik baras kī ho gaʾī ek ek pal ek ik ghaṛī |
7a) in the service of children, it's as
ten years have passed for you |
bachchoñ
kī sevā meñ tumheñ guzre haiñ jaise das baras qadr us kī jānegā vuhī dam par ho yūñ jiske banī |
8a) the great thing you have taken on your
shoulders-- what do men know about it? 8b) they considered that it was a strange lump, of which the blister burst |
kī
hai muhim jo tum ne sar mardoñ ko kyā us kī ḳhabar jāne parāʾī peṛ vuh jis kī bivāʾī ho phaṭī |
9a) apart
from men's sowing the seed, care for the offspring-- 9b) after all, oh suffering ones, [to perform] this service fell on your head |
thā
pālnā aulād kā mardoñ ke bote se sivā āḳhir yih ai dukhyāriyo ! ḳhidmat tumhāre sar paṛī |
10a)
if you had not been born, this boat would not have made the crossing 10b) if this burden fell on men, in two days they'd be screaming |
paidā
agar hotīñ nah tum beṛā nah hotā pār yih chīḳh uṭhte do din meñ agar mardoñ pah paṛtā bār yih |
