alas, in the world you've experienced much cruelty and oppression |
afsos
dunyā meñ bahut tum par huʾe jaur-o-jafā |
2a) often communities have girded up their
loins to murder you 2b) so that they themselves would erase you entirely from the tablet of existence |
akṡar
tumhāre qatl par qaumoñ ne bāñdhī hai kamar deñ tā kih tum ko yak qalam ḳhvud lauḥ-e hastī se miṭā |
3a) for ages you were buried alive in the dust 3b) you had no helper or supporter except for the Lord Himself |
gāṛī
gaʾīñ tum muddatoñ miṭṭī meñ jītī jāgtī ḥāmī tumhārā thā nah yāvar koʾī juz żāt-e ḳhudā |
4a) you have always kept burning alive, with
dead husbands 4b) and the world calmly kept watching this spectacle |
zindah
sadā jaltī rahīñ tum murdah ḳhāvindoñ ke sāth aur chain se ʿālam rahā yih sab tamāshe dekhtā |
5a) you were married at a time when you were
not aware of marriage 5b) a lifelong vow was bound with half-spun thread |
byāhī
gaʾīñ us vaqt tum jab byāh se vāqif nah thīñ jo ʿumr bhar ka ʿahd thā vuh kachche tāge se bañdhā |
6a) mother and father married you off, oh tongueless
ones! in such a way 6b) the way people punish a criminal for some cause |
byāhā
tumheñ māñ bāp ne ai be-zabāno ! is t̤araḥ jaise kisī tafṣīr par mujrim ko dete haiñ sazā |
7a) as long as your married state remained,
your life passed between hope and fear |
guzrī
umīd-o-bīm meñ jab tak rahā bāqī suhāg bevah huʾīñ to ʿumr bhar phir chain qismat meñ nah thā |
8a) you kept taking tougher than tough examinations;
but the gossips, 8b) [*urdu 7*] if you kept faith till death, still called you faithless |
tum
saḳht se saḳht imtiḥāñ detī rahīñ paz-rāʾigāñ kī tum ne jāneñ tak fidā kahlāʾīñ lekin bevafā |
9a) although you received
no reward for your endurance here 9b) but you've done here that task that wouldn't be do-able by an angel |
go
ṣabr kā apne nah kuchh tum ko milā inʿām yāñ par jo firishtah se nah ho vuh kar gaʾīñ tum kām yāñ |
