33) although outwardly they are very humble
in their hearts they are bubbling with pride 
go ba:zahaar hai inkisaar bahut
dil me;N hai josh-e ifti;xaar bahut
34) how they strut and display themselves
they themselves sing their own praises 
kis qadar tante hai;N bararte hai;N
;xvud bhii ta((riif apnii karte hai;N
35) there's a commentary on every single word
there's an explication of every idea 
hotii hai laf:z laf:z kii tashrii;h
hotii hai baat baat kii ta.srii;h
36) why wouldn't they be enthusiastic in their own praise
they consider, 'we are worthy of this' 
kyuu;N nah ho apnii mad;h ke shaa))iq
jaante hai;N kih ham hai;N is laa))iq
37) how far they are [from the truth], God forbid!
how proud they are, God forbid! 
kis qadar duur hai;N ma((aa;zall;aah
kaise ma;Gruur hai;N ma((aa;zall;aah
38) such subtle perceivers, such subtle judges
such poets they are, such connoisseurs
nuktah-fahm aise nuktah-daa;N aise
shaa((ir aise hai;N qadar-daa;N aise
39) what reality does false praise have?
when it wouldn't be the truth, then what's the pleasure? 
jhuu;Tii ta((riif kii ;haqiiqat kyaa
jab ;haqiiqat nah ho to la;z;zat kyaa
40) what's the joy in that, what's the pleasure?
someone should ask, what's happened to them? 
us me;N kyaa ;ha:z hai yih mazaa kyaa hai
ko))ii puuchhe unhe;N hu))aa kyaa hai
41) although there will be criticisms of me
I understand what behavior there will be 
go kih merii nadiimate;N ho;Ngii
mai;N samajhtaa huu;N jo gate;N ho;Ngii
42) I will receive praise for plain speaking
I too will achieve my goal

43) What am I seeking, that I would fear anybody?

baat sachchii hai kyuu;N nah kah gu;zaruu;N
44) I don't like to keep things wrapped up
rather, I don't know how to keep things wrapped up 
mujh ko bhaatii nahii;N lagii lip;Tii
balkih aatii nahii;N lagii lip;Tii
45) I am unhappy with the style of the people of poetry
I am unhappy with the path of the people of skill 
:tarz-e ahl-e su;xan se naa-;xvush huu;N
ravish-e ahl-e fan se naa-;xvush huu;N
46) if this is what's called "poetry"
then I'll keep my distance from such "poetry"

duur se aisii shaa((irii ko salaam
The justice-loving friends gave great praise to this nazm. At every verse the people of the gathering kept on offering praises. Munshi Sahib was in a kind of trance. Umra'o Jan was swaying back and forth, and my own state-- well, only my heart would be able to tell.
