[{1589,3}]

koʾī nahīñ shāhān-e salaf meñ ḳhālī paṛe haiñ donoñ ʿirāq
yaʿnī ḳhvud gum iskandar hai nā-paidā hai dārā āj

1) there's no one among the ancient kings; Babylonia and Media lie fallen, empty
2) that is, Alexander himself is lost; Darius is not apparent, today

Notes:

ʿirāq : 'Name of a territory between Persia and Arabia (it is divided into two portions, viz. ʿrāq-e ʿarab , 'Arabian ʻIrāq,' the ancient Babylonia or Chaldea; and ʿirāq-e ʿajam , 'Persian 'Irāq,' comprehending Media)'. (Platts p.759)

S. R. Faruqi:

[See {1589,1}.]

This ghazal is the first of a set of two about which SRF makes special claims for an over-all 'musical' effect; see {1589,1} for his discussion. This verse has been included only in order to provide access to the whole ghazal.
