In this verse the melancholy dignity and sadness are at such a level that it seems to be the fruit of a whole lifetime. And then too, what a mischievousness that mischievousness must be, through which such valuable people have met their end-- people who were the flower of the age.

The interpretation of kho diye can be that you made those people so sad that they renounced passion, or renounced the world. They left you, and also left the affairs of life. Then, ;xaak chhaan kar is also very fine because this can be in its dictionary meaning (it sifted and cleaned the dust, and created them from the best dust), and also its idiomatic meaning (after much exertion, after many attempts).

There's also the suggestion that in former times gold used to be sought for by sifting riverbed sand, or gravelly soil. In this regard to call the sky the 'sphere' is also very fine, because in it is hidden the theme of the revolving of the sky. In the fifth divan he has expressed these ideas very straightforwardly [{1668,2}]:

jaise ;Gam-e hijraa;N me;N us ke ((aashiq jii kho bai;The hai;N
barso;N maare char;x-e falak to aise hove;N paidaa log

[the kind of lovers who lost themselves in the grief of separation from her
if the sphere of the sky would revolve for years, then such people would be created]
